Frequently Asked Questions
What information can I get from an IP lookup?
An IP lookup returns the approximate geographic location (country, region, city), ISP (Internet Service Provider), ASN (Autonomous System Number), organization, timezone, and GPS coordinates. Note that city-level accuracy varies and consumer IPs are often only accurate to the region level.
Can I look up a domain name instead of an IP address?
Yes. Enter a domain like github.com or google.com and the tool will resolve it to an IP address and return the geolocation data for that IP.
Why does my IP show an incorrect city?
IP geolocation databases map IPs to geographic regions, but city-level accuracy is imperfect. ISPs sometimes register IP blocks in cities where they have headquarters rather than where end users are located. VPN usage will show the VPN server's location instead of yours.
What is an ASN (Autonomous System Number)?
An ASN is a unique identifier assigned to a group of IP networks controlled by a single organization (like an ISP, company, or university). It's used in BGP routing to identify which organization is responsible for a particular block of IP addresses.
Is my own IP address visible to websites I visit?
Yes, your public IP address is visible to every website you visit — it's required for routing traffic back to you. This tool shows what that information reveals about your location. Using a VPN routes your traffic through a server in another location.
